During a free initial consultation, attorney Antill will address any of your sentencing concerns. He will also outline ways to decrease your penalties through alternative sentencing, such as:
- Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) panels: Families who have lost loved ones in drunk driving accidents lead seminars to explain the devastation of tragically losing a loved one. Individuals convicted of drunk driving are often required to participate in MADD seminars to deter drunk driving in the future.
- Hospital and Morgue programs (HAM): Judges are known to sentence individuals for less jail time in exchange for educational opportunities. For example, individuals convicted of drunk driving are sometimes required to participate in a HAM program at a local hospital. Individuals see firsthand the morgues of individuals killed from drunk drivers to deter future DUI/DWIs.
- DUI classes : California has more than 400 alcohol treatment programs for first-time and multiple offenders. AA meetings and other DUI classes are designed to address any alcohol-related dependency issues.
When appropriate, we advise clients to participate in alcohol treatment programs before a conviction. We can use this proactive measure to show the court you are taking the right steps to get help. Our firm also pursues community service efforts in exchange for less jail time.
Ignition Interlock Device Requirement for Repeat Offenders
If you are a repeat offender, you will be required to install a Breathalyzer-type system on your vehicle. Known as an ignition interlock device, the small machine is designed to detect driver's blood alcohol content. You will not be able to start your car until blowing into the machine. If your blood alcohol content is too high, your car will not start.
Drivers required to install an ignition interlock device on their vehicles must pay the installation and upkeep costs. This could add up to hundreds if not more than a $1,000, depending on your sentence.
